Parents Tui and Ed Preston
Middle of three children, brother Edward (6 years
older) and sister Jan (4 years younger). At three
years old,
Gaylene, performed a recitation at the Karoro Sunday
School concert (the most loudly applauded).
Ten year old GP and her six year old sister, Jan,
won prizes in annual competitions in Oamaru, Greymouth
and Ashburton, performing elocutionary items and
songs.
GP
secured first placing in the10-years and under
elocution section at the Oamaru competition (1st
in test, own
selection, light verse and humorous divisions);
she was also awarded
the Oamaru Competitition Society’s 10-years-and-under
scholarship as well as bringing the North Otago
Pipe Band Supporters Cup back to Greymouth.
1957 Family moved to Napier. GP won the Piano under
12 competition at the Napier Competition Society’s
annual Easter festival, and the Piano duet under
12 (with Peter Walls) came 2nd in Vocal solo and
accompanist under
14 (with Wendy Rieper) Reading at sight under 12,

GP was a successful candidate (Grade 1, with distinction
and Grade 8) in the theory examinations for the Royal
Schools of Music.

Ruby and Rata received Finalist awards under the
film, best actor in a female role and director categories
at the New Zealand Film and Television Awards. Received
awards for best actor (Lee Mete Kingi), best editing,
best film score (Jonathan Crayford) and best contribution
to a soundtrack.
Ruby and Rata topped the kiwi box office in the first
week of its N.Z cinema release Oct 4 grossing an
average $11,000 across six screens. It was the first
time for
some years that a domestically produced feature had
been right up there with the best from Hollywood.
On five
screens, its first two weeks grossed over $100,000,
making it NZ’s first biggest grossing theatrical release
for two consecutive weeks. Its Auckland figures increased
during the second week-a most unusual event. After six
weeks, with six prints, the film’s box office gross
exceeded $230,000.
Filmstar, an American company, acquired world sales
rights to the Ruby and Rata, excluding North America,
Germany,
Australia and New Zealand.
Ruby and Rata selected for the 1990 Montreal, Toronto,
Hawaii and London Film Festivals.
Completed Ruby & Rata (shot in Auckland), achieved
no 1 at the Box Office in its first week of theatrical
release; took Ruby & Rata to Cannes (fully financed
by the New Zealand Film Commission). While at Cannes
Robin Laing also promoted the Bread and Roses mini series
project she and Preston were developing with Dorothee
Pinfold of Pinflicks.
GP attended Ruby and Rata’s international festival
premiere at Toronto (where it sold out faster than any
other film; as a result festival programmers scheduled
another screening, the film received two ovations) Film
Festivals. Selected in the top 10 films at Toronto (audience
popular vote) It was then seen in the Film Festival.
Ruby and Rata was also selected for the Haifa and
for the annual Indian Film Festivals. Before Munich
it
screened in Paris in the Creteil Women’s Film Festival.
